More pictures of Rome

We celebrated our first anniversary - January 14 -in Rome. We flew in on the 13th, and left on the 16th. While we didn't have a lot of time, we saw the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, ancient Rome, and most of the sights that were on our list. We stayed in an 18th century monastery-turned hotel. We didn't have great luck in the restaurant department, so we ate gobs of gelatto to make up for it. Ellie was good most of the time, although we had to get creative to find places to feed and change her. All in all, we had a splendid time; we were together!

I don't remember who constructed this arch and why.

This is inside the Coliseum where gladiators fought, and the government and wealthy citizens hosted other wild events. They've recreated part of the wood floor on the far side of the arena. It was covered with sand back in the day. The chambers beneath the floor held animals, gladiators, and other gear for special effects, which would rise onto the stage with the help of ropes and pulleys.

Here we are in front of the Coliseum. It was a pretty imposing structure - awesome to see.

That is one cute girl! We had to fight off those Italian boys with a stick!

It was getting on toward evening in this picture, and I think we were starting to get cold.
